註釋The basic techniques, x-ray diffraction, microscopy and fusion studies, along with the supplementary techniques of differential thermal analyses and friction and wear measurements, are described as related to the binary phase system, PbS-B2O3. The conversion of PbS to PbSO4 was approximately one half when heated to 1000F. However, analyses of various PbS-B2O3 mixtures indicated that PbS and B2O3 were the only crystalline phases to be expected in the majority of the specimens. A glassy phase exists in all specimens, to some degree, oover temperature range 300F to 1500F. The mechanism of lubrication in the high B2O3-low PbS mixtures is a function of the amount of liquidus phase present while the liquidus phase only effects the low B2O3-high PbS mixtures above 980F. For a good operational solid film lubrication system, frictional compatibility must be observed between the lubricating pigment and the binder over the entire temperature range.
