This paper traces the various programmes taken up for rural development in India and the role of Science & Technology in changing the rural scene. The manner in which significant scientific advances in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Energy, Housing and Space Technology are being used to tackle rural poverty and help rural development is highlighted. At the same time, the paper highlights the importance of correctly identifying the Basic Needs of rural groups and using appropriate technology to transmit needed skills to the beneficiaries to lead a better life. The paper stresses the fact that the important thing is to use science and technology to help skill acquisition rather than evolve programme of subsidy. [Authors' abstract].
