This manuscript is an essay, with a photograph and drawings, on the authorship of the inscriptions on the Dighton Rock, located near Taunton, Mass. Written in 1865, while Hale was a chaplain with the U.S. Navy, the essay discusses both the Norse and the Indian hypotheses concerning the origin of the inscriptions, and he concludes that the inscriptions are Indian.
