註釋Nestled under Whangarei's Western Hills, bordered by a trickling stream, the leafy park at the end of Selwyn Avenue revealed almost no sign of its origins untile the early 21st Century. Originally known as Waiarohia or Rust Lane, the cemetery was later officially named Mission Ground. All through the seventy years since closure, descendants yearned for the names of their forebears to be inscribed on a memorial. A cairn bearing 66 names was unveiled in 2010 and work began on compiling the first volume of the settlers' stories, published in 2011. By 2017 a total of 161 names were inscribed on the cairn. Two additional volumes tell their stories. The 3 volumes record the controversial history of the site and draws a picture of the life and times of Whangarei's earliest European settlers.
