Canadian Manufactured Exports
註釋From the back cover: This technical study on manufactured exports...explores the difficult structural problems faced by small and medium-sized manufacturers in Canada. The study assesses the impact of high labour costs, low productivity, and fluctuating exchange rates on the competitiveness of Canadian industry, and explores opportunities to increase manufactured exports in light of freer trade and heightened competitive pressure from Pacific Rim producers and developing nations. Freer trade is highlighted as a challenge and an opportunity for Canadian firms to increase specialization, raise production volumes, and cut unit costs, so as to become established in new export markets. Through a unique survey of 15 Canadian-owned firms and 15 foreign-owned subsidiaries, the authors identify barriers to increased efficiency and determine whether they are unique to either sector of control. The study concludes with a series of recommended strategies for private sector managers interested in raising productivity and competing successfully as world marketers for their products gradually open up.
