Applied Calculus
註釋"Calculus is one of the greatest achievements of the human intellect. Inspired by problems in astronomy, Newton and Leibniz developed the ideas of calculus 300 years ago. Each century since then has demonstrated the power of calculus to illuminate questions in mathematics, the physical sciences, engineering, business, and the social and biological sciences. Calculus has been so successful because of its extraordinary power to reduce complicated problems to simple rules and procedures. Therein lies the danger in teaching calculus: it is possible to teach the subject as nothing but the rules and proceduresãaÈ"thereby losing sight of both the mathematics and of its practical value. This edition of Applied Calculus not only continues our effort to promote courses in which understanding reinforces computation but also strives to address the context in which we will be teaching calculus for the next decade. The revisions for this edition were made during the Covid-19 pandemic. We have focused on updating the examples and problems in the text to make them relevant to this unique population of students and teachers. In our teaching we found that using mathematics to make sense of the pandemic was empowering for our students. Flexibility in a New Era of Teaching and Learning The world has changed and the education system has changed with it. With little or no training, instructors and students have adjusted to distance learning. As instructors ourselves, we saw how challenging this adjustment has been, especially for our students. These experiences taught us first-hand the importance of being able to adapt our classes to a variety of formats, from regular in-person classes, to online courses or some hybrid version in-between. The basis of the Seventh Edition is to provide a text and companion resources that are flexible enough to support an active and engaging experience in each of these formats"--
