In this novel written for adults, the main character, Wally Popoff, strives to carve out an identity for himself within the Sons of Freedom Doukhobor community of the British Columbia Kootenays in the middle of last century. He confronts the injustices of the authorities who try to force Wally and other children to submit to a process of assimilation, or Canadianization, at the New Denver Residential School during the 1950s, while struggling against his own community's commitment to unorthodox protest methods involving nude demonstrations and wide spread acts of arson and bombing. Throughout we witness a young man caught between forces that demand inordinate survival skills as he navigates a treacherous course between justice and revenge.
