[Abstract] This study explores and addresses the question: What is the experience of being a play therapist? A literature review revealed minimal research, and no phenomenological studies on this experience. Personal experiences were obtained by nine co-researchers using the phenomenological method of research. Data revealed four major themes and ten sub-themes within the major themes. Themes presented in this study were: the play therapist's experience of "being with" the child, expectations of oneself, personal enjoyment of the work, and wondering. Sub-themes for "being with" were: being a child advocate, being authentic, and being in the moment. Subthemes for expectation of oneself were: pressure from within, pressure from parents, and pressure from other sources. Personal enjoyment sub-themes were: pleasure from sessions, and pleasure from being a play therapist. Wondering sub-themes were: wondering within the session, and wondering about the effectiveness of the work. Less significant, were minor themes that which require further research to verify the universiality of the experiences. Minor themes were: playfulness, learning from the child, self-doubt, and isolation. The results of this study imply the need for further research into this topic. Through elimination by structural description of the data, being in relationship with a child, being misunderstood and unappreciated, and personal enjoyment reflect the essence of the play therapist's experience. Educators of play therapy, play therapists, and researchers of play therapy may use these results as a starting point to look further into these matters.
