註釋
Increased landslide activity is one of the well documented effects of climate change. While the effects of other climate related natural disasters are well documented, landslides have been rather neglected mainly due to difficulties in obtaining reliable data.We use a relatively new dataset, the Global Fatal Landslide Database, to study the determinants of the number of fatalities from non-seismic landslides and their effect on economic growth in up to 150 countries throughout the period from 2004 to 2017. We find that geographic, economic and institutional variables influence the number of fatalities. This has implications for public policy as countries with adverse geography can mitigate the effects of landslides by increasing government budget expenditure, increasing economic openness to the outside world and keeping political violence under control. We also find that landslides have one positive effect, stimulating economic activity in the short run by 0.5-1.2 percentage points.
