Billy Budd was published posthumously, but before he died Herman Melville tried to write the work as a poem, a short story, and a novella. After its publication in the 1920s, writers began adapting it to stage, to opera, for television and radio. Later it became a Broadway rock musical, then a ballet. This book traces the many manifestations of Billy Budd in art, film, and music.
