註釋Coal fly ash has been identified as a source of gallium, which is increasingly being considered as a possible raw material for the production of semi-conductors. In coal-fired electric power stations, this fly ash is removed from the flue dust by an electrostatic precipitator that usually consists of four sets of acceptor plates. A method for the determination of low concentrations of gallium in fly ash is presented and used to show that the gallium content of the fly ash increases from one set of plates to the next. An explanation for this finding is postulated, and the problems likely to be encountered in any future metallurgical utilization of the fly ash as a source of gallium are enumerated.
