Jedediah Smith

He was the first American to cross the Sierra Nevadas and the Great Basin and the first American to reach California by an overland route. As a fur trader, he was considered a leader of the mountain men. His expeditions helped open the West to thousands of emigrants, changing the shape of the United States.
