After 21 years in prison, journalist Mike Cannon is determined to set the record straight about his time with an East Suffolk charity, ESA, that led to his shooting an army officer and his subsequent conviction.
Mike’s account sets out the conditions at the time: coastal erosion, flooding, families moving away, cuts in services and the rise of illegal bands, many of them involved in smuggling. When the army gains wide-ranging powers to deal with civilian law and order, ESA comes under suspicion as a cover for dissidents opposed to the government. Ambushed whilst on ESA work, Mike is forced to shoot and kill the army officer and then flee from the area. However after a period of freedom he is forced to surrender to the authorities.
Whilst writing his account, Mike becomes convinced that someone at ESA must have tipped-off the army as to his movements. He produces a list of possible suspects and one by one tracks them down until he comes face to face with the person who betrayed him...
