註釋For the last few decades Pauline scholarship has given increasing attention to the study of Paul within his broader Jewish milieu by examining Paul's letters in comparison with non-canonical Jewish texts. The present study continues this trend by providing a juxtaposition between Paul's reading of the Abrahamic narrative from Genesis in Romans 4 (Gen 11:26-25:10; Rom 4:1-25), and the rewriting of Genesis in the book of Jubilees (Jub 11:14-23:8). The emphasis then is on Pauline hermeneutics as it relates to the Genesis narrative as an impetus behind the variation we see in his interpretation of this foundational text, when compared to other Jewish readers exemplified in this study by Jubilees. While the two authors share a canon, but diverge regarding their hermeneutical approach to the text, this thesis argues that the Christ-event announced in the apostolic kerygma was the extra-scriptural point of reference by which Paul read the Genesis narrative. This served as the incentive behind the differing and incompatible exegetical conclusions within Paul's understanding of the Abraham story vis-à-vis Jubilees. Chapter One provides a statement of inquiry as a means of introducing this project's subject matter, and provides an explanation and rationale behind comparing Paul to Jubilees. Chapter Two surveys the book of Jubilees as it relates to the unknown author's reading and interpretation of the Genesis narrative, and provides a foundation for the study of Jubilees' reading of the Abrahamic story. Chapter Three contains this study for it delivers a detailed analysis of Jubilees' understanding of the Jewish forefather, but this examination is done apart from and in isolation to Romans 4. Chapter Four begins by interacting with other approaches to Pauline hermeneutics as a means of introducing the issue. It is argued that in Romans 4 Paul has a circular hermeneutic by which the Christ-event and the Genesis text are brought together in a dialogical relationship. This hermeneutic is then tested with a detailed exegesis of Romans 3:21-4:25. Here it is argued that the content of Romans 4:1-25 is an interpretation of the Abraham narrative in Genesis, but it is a reading which is dependent upon the Christ-event which Paul previously explained in 3:21-31. The conclusions regarding Paul's reading of the Abraham story are brought into conversation with the conclusions regarding Jubilees' own reading from the previous chapter, and it is shown that the driving force behind the incompatible Pauline understanding of the shared Pentateuchal text is Paul's Christological presupposition.
