註釋"The written record of our Maori civilisation has been mostly done by Europeans, by outsiders. They looked at the Maori civilisation and wrote what they assumed they saw, heard or smelled. I have produced this publication to try and contribute to efforts to record and document the traditional knowledge of our islands. My intention here is to compile and document images, designs, motifs and patterns of the people of Nukutere (Cook Islands) into one source so that it becomes an easy reference for our people and those elsewhere in the world who are interested. In this work I have tried to show a traditional artefact, then isolate a motif graphically and provide details and information. Each image is named and when a motif had no known name I have given it an arbitrary and provisional one. The provisional name reflects the island of origin, the purpose of the artefact or its resemblance to an actual image. Any of the provisional names may be replaced with the traditional name if the person requesting the change can prove its veracity."--Introduction
