Chemical and pharmacological constituents in traditional medicine
註釋The number and variety of tropical plants provide immense opportunities for finding interesting natural products, some of which will have potential medicinal properties. However, for application as modern drugs it is noted that nature only provides the model compounds and man will need to perfect them. The present emphasis of research towards finding new drugs for the treatment of mankind's many ailments and to fight new viral or resistant bacterial strains will provide a welcome impetus to the progress of traditional medicine. The common criticism that the practice of traditional medicine is `less scientific than desired' does not seriously present a problem to science as science only demands experimental proof and its reproducibility. Meanwhile traditional medicine will still serve its function, provide hope for some and challenge researchers to understand its mysteries. [Author's abstract].
