Many of the pieces have previously appeared in journals such as the 'Australian Listener' and '21C'. The title essay, 'A Promise of Miracles', is the text of the 25th Alfred Deakin Lecture. The author is a well-known Australian science broadcaster, who has presented the ABC program, the 'Science Show', since 1975. He has been president of ANZAAS since 1992 and founding commissioner for the Commission for the Future since 1984. His other publications include 'Outpourings' and 'Here Come the Philistines'.
