Buxton - Its Past, Present, People and Places
註釋Buxton is a small town 100 km from Melbourne's GPO, accessed through the Black Spur via the Maroondah Highway. From the 1830s the original Taungurung people were being displaced by European settlers, and by the 1870s the main industries were timber harvesting, dairying and guest houses. Today it has developed into rural and residential living with country pursuits such as fishing and hobby farms. The book shows Buxton as seen through the eyes of its people. It is not a solemn list of people, places and times like a 'traditional' history. Instead, it is a trove of stories of what people saw, felt and understood; how they worked and how they lived. Each person is a small part of the picture, but put together, their stories provide a fascinating view of a very vibrant, productive and interesting place: the small town of Buxton, Victoria. The creation of this book was triggered by the recovery from the Black Saturday fires of 2009; however, this was not to be a book about the fires. The community was ageing, industry and town dynamics were changing. With so much lost in the fires, the community realised that with the destruction of the physical reminders the memories would fade rapidly, so it was important to record them now.Members of the Buxton community created this book for general benefit, not for profit. The editors have worked hard to preserve the 'feel' of the authors, so inevitably there is overlap and even contradiction, which only adds to the authenticity of the rural Australian experience. We trust you will find Buxton as interesting as we do.
