註釋
Originally published in German in 1961 and translated into English by Janet Sondheimer in 1962. The book is a detailed summary of what is often regarded as the height of the middle ages, the time in Europe between the beginning of the twelfth century and the middle of the fourteenth century. Heer describes areas sometimes overlooked in general histories of the period, such as the relationship between the aristocracy and the peasantry, love and literature, and even science. All of the standard themes are there as well and are discussed in sufficient detail to provide an overview of the period. Heer looks at issues such as the faith of the church and the people, the crusades, the conflict between Eastern and Western Christianity, various popular religious movements, the rise of the universities and of scholasticism the rise of the nation state, as well as the literature, art, and architecture of the period. The book also contains a hundred illustrations, showing the art and architecture of the period.
