註釋
Surveys the history of Drohobycz from the end of the 19th century, focusing on Bruno Schulz and his family, the environment in which he grew up, and its influence on his writings. Chs. 8-14 (pp. 164-273) deal with the World War II period, including the presence of the Soviets and later of the Nazis in Drohobycz, pogroms perpetrated by Ukrainians, the ghettoization of the Jews, murders, and deportations. Pp. 175-187 contain excerpts from the diary of the Gestapo officer Felix Landau, who "protected" Schulz and had him paint murals on the walls of Landau's home. Describes the circumstances of Schulz's death; he was murdered by the Nazis in 1942. Pp. 216-231 deal with Berthold Beitz, a German who worked in Drohobycz and Borysław, and saved hundreds of Jews.
