Specifically, the focus is on whether the Russo-Japanese war impacted these perspectives, and if so, in what ways. To dissect the many potential facets of this issue, it is broken down into several key questions. For example: how did Russian illustrations and accounts of the Japanese change from before the war (including during the Boxer Rebellion, where Japan was allied to Russia and 6 other nations) to the years afterwards? More importantly, these questions are set up to shed light on Japan's own opinions on its claim to territories abroad (that is, Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula). This is paired together with an insight on sentiments of nationalism, as depicted by visual sources from the time.
