Robert Carter
註釋These typed excerpts from Carter's Journals and Letterbooks include copies of Carter's letters, many of them written to some of the most prominent men of Virginia and Maryland. They illustrate the wide range of his activities and interests. Although much of the material deals with agricultural production, especially the cultivation and sale of tobacco, it is evident that Carter's time was also devoted to manufacturing and commercial interests. Like other 18th century Virginia country gentlemen, Carter cultivated a fine grace of living. These entries record his efforts to purchase books and newspapers and reflect his interest in music. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Carter broke with the Anglican Church and converted to the Baptist Church in Virginia. There is evidence in these entries that he took his religious responsibilities seriously.
