Newcomer Latinx Emergent Bilingual High School Students: A Study of Their Academic, Mental Health, and Adjustment Experiences
註釋This study explored the experiences of newcomer emergent bilingual Latinx students, their teachers, and their counselors from an inner-city high school, using a qualitative phenomenological approach. Most previous work on supporting newcomer emergent bilingual Latinx youth has been viewed through the lens of teachers; thus, there is a knowledge gap in addressing the mental health needs of newcomer youth beyond the classroom. Collaboration of counselors, teachers, and administrators, and the implementation of culture and language awareness within the school site, are critical to creating a meaningful, safe environment and a "seeking-to-understand" approach toward newcomer students. This phenomenological study was conducted with four newcomer emergent bilingual high school students, three teachers, and one counselor using purposive sampling. Data were collected via interviews and focus groups to highlight the experiences and voices of the participants. Recommendations are presented to raise awareness of the needs of the emergent bilingual population and ways to prepare school counselors and teachers to meet the needs of this population in the public schools more effectively.
