註釋
Consideration has been given to the thermodynamics of alum formation which occurs on roasting aluminous raw materials with ammonium sulphate. The course of the reactions occurring during the roasts have been followed using techniques of thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, high temperature microscopy and x-ray powder photography. It has been demonstrated that the attacking species is molten ammonium pyrosulphate ((NH4)2S2O7) and not, as has been generally accepted until now, ammonium hydrosulphate (NH4HSO4). In all cases the reaction is shown to be thermodynamically feasible but where the formation of soluble alums is inhibited by slow rates of reaction, consideration is given to the internal structures of the materials involved in an attempt to explain the reasons.
