註釋
Music While You Work was one of British radio's longest running and best loved shows. From its inception in the dark days of 1940, when it was intended to boost morale in industry with uplifting tunes, it proved so popular with listeners at home as well (4 million of them) that it lasted twenty-seven years and was revived more than once. This comprehensive and appealing book gives a complete history of the show and includes many amusing anecdotes about live broadcasts that did not go according to plan, as well as revealing glimpses of the workings of the BBC and tempting examples of Music While You Work 'menus'. There are also fascinating biographies of over fifty of the bandleaders associated with Music While You Work, and the book is in part a tribute to the musicians who gave so much pleasure to so many, and in many cases suffered hardship when the programme ended. The music was played by a wide range of light orchestras, dance bands and instrumental groups, each with their own distinctive style, led by musicians who were not only masters of their craft, but also possessed the all-important ability to put on a good show.
