De wandelende Jood in volkskunde en letterkunde
註釋Discusses the figure of the Wandering Jew, the Ahasverus story, as myth or legend. Refutes the description of Ahasverus as a sage, as there is no objective historical source. Contends that Ahasverus witnessed all the important events in the world. He may be a symbol of Judaism and/or of humanity. He will forever be restless, as he ridiculed and rejected God. Some see him as Judas or Promotheus. Ahasverus' characteristics are a combination of many different stories from all over the world developed over a long period of time. Different images of him are found on postcards and in books; many popular sayings relate to the wanderings of Ahasverus. Includes an extensive bibliography on the subject of the Wandering Jew (p. 158-240).
