Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on China's Canned Food Export
註釋China is the world's largest exporter of canned food, yet there is little empirical research on China's canned food. It is generally believed that canned food is particularly well suited for storage and consumption at special times, such as during a pandemic, due to their characteristics. The objective of this study is to investigate whether and to what extent the COVID -19 pandemic significantly affected the export of canned food products in China and which canned food products were most affected. The interrupted time series analysis showed that the more exportable products were more affected by the pandemic. The largest increase in export value affected by the pandemic averaged within 3.1 percentage points per month which did not show a jump in growth as expected. The study identifies three main reasons for these results: First, the pandemic itself did not necessarily have a positive impact on exports; second, a change in consumer attitudes toward COVID -19; and third, an increase in exports of alternatives from other countries. However, in the context of continued deterioration in global food security and nutrition due to the COVID -19 pandemic and other causes such as climate change, this study shows that canned foods are ideal emergency foods. If relevant industries can actively improve their production technologies and continue to push the boundaries of taste, canned food will not only promote the healthy and sustainable development of relevant industries, but also greatly improve the well-being of consumers. At the same time, they can also give new impetus to food aid, making canned food an ideal tool in the fight against the global food crisis caused by the pandemic.
