註釋
Every family has an untold story of their triumphs and tragedies and the Holms family is no different. This is a family history from their early arrival and settlement in New Zealand; their impetus to support the enfranchisement of women to win the right to vote 1893; as well as including the triumphs and tragedies in war; through to the family's involvement in the natural disaster of the 1931 Napier earthquake; and the contribution to post-war education in NZ. Grant Holms, a former Weir House foundation student, WWII veteran, retired primary school headmaster was prominent at national level representing the Assistant Masters Association and president of the Auckland branch of the NZEI in the period of the 50s and 60s when 50 children in his class was quite common. From the Christchurch and South Island region you will find many family associations from Grant Holms' friendship at Weir House of former Christchurch City librarian Ron O'Reilly, through to serving with First Echelon men Charles Upham and Howard Kippenberger. Amongst the many intriguing titbits of NZ history it identifies the great work of two relatives, in particular that of Selina Sutherland and that of Professor Ian Falloon, a great-great grandnephew of Selina. As you may know Selina Sutherland was responsible for the care and pity of some 3000 waifs off the streets of Melbourne in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the setting up of the orphanages. She helped found Masterton Hospital. Her legacy continues today with the Berry Street School campuses in Melbourne. Professor Falloon was a world authority in the field of mental health with the introduction of programmes that brought into fruition community well-being instead of institutionalised treatment, in particular, a treatment for schizophrenia. He would become Dean and Professor-Emeritus of psychiatry at Auckland University in the 1990s. He was a cousin of former MP John Falloon. Of the lesser known family relatives you may be acquainted with includes Sue Coutts of Wanaka Wastebusters and Angela Holms-Suman. The latter served with the UN during the Serbian crises for five years and four years in East Timor. It is a potted history along with some notable photographs and pieces of history that may surprise people along that journey of discovery.
