General description of the collection: The Joseph M. McLaughlin papers include photocopies of non-commissioned officer's papers: Joseph M. McLaughlin's COLLISION IN THE ATLANTIC, an unpublished account focusing on the collision of the U.S. troopship Great Northern and the British freighter Brinkburn, October 3, 1918. McLaughlin was aboard the Great Northern as part of a regiment of replacements enroute to France. The account also covers his transfer from Fort Moultrie to Camp Merritt preparatory to going overseas, plus his subsequent service with the 54th Coast Artillery Regiment in France, 1918-1919. Brief references are also made to the Great Northern's history from commissioning to decommissioning, 1915-1948, including World War II service as the troopship General George Simonds.
