註釋Are realists correct to emphasize human nature as the starting point of their analysis? I argue yes. Do they have a good understanding of "human nature?" I argue, no. Despite their best efforts to focus on structure, neorealists did not escape making theoretically consequential assumptions about human nature that are much the same as the realist understanding. Views about human nature have helped structure world political institutions and practices. I offer a larger, and arguably more complete view of human nature -- as co-constituted by nurture, as flexible and as complex -- and suggests some implications of this revised understanding for our analysis of the structures and processes of world politics. In particular, I discuss the neuroscience of fear and empathy. I conclude with a discussion of a research agenda, methods, and caveats about the dangers of biology and neuroscience envy.
