註釋Hermann Karl Hesse was born on July 2, 1877 in Calw in the Kingdom of Württemberg in the German Empire. He was one of six children, including two who died in infancy. He was the son of Johannes Hesse, a German who was born in Estonia, thus giving Hermann citizenship in both the German Empire and the Russian Empire. Hermann's mother was Marie Gundert, whose parents were missionaries. Her father was the Reverend Dr. Hermann Gundert. In addition to his missionary work, he wrote books related to the Mayalamam language (an Indian language spoken primarily in Kerala), including a dictionary and translations of books into Mayalamam.
