Learning is a cumulative, ongoing experience. Writing strategies should be taught in a laboratory environment where students feel free to experiment with different elements of writing. As a result, students become better writers.
Modeled after the original Writing Lab, this text is designed to introduce younger students, as early as grade 2, to the fundamentals of good writing. Lessons in focus, fluency, clarity, elaboration, style, voice, organization of ideas, and revision are written at an appropriate level of instruction for early writers. The interactive teaching model encourages students to talk about writing as they work in ways that develop their understanding of writing strategies and revision.
An hour a week is all it takes for students to develop a love of writing while they become fluent, strategic writers. This is an easy-to-use, powerful component of any language program.
For teaching advanced writing skills, we recommend the original Writing Lab and Advancing Writing Skills: A Guide to Authentic Writing.
