Galaxy Destruction in the Violent Universe
註釋Galaxy formation theory must be formed and function in two realms: that of the cosmologically dominant dark matter in its merger-driven violence, and that of the baryonic smudges tracing this violence in miniature at the centers of dark matter halos and their substructures. The fractal-like nature of hierarchical structure formation in the universe allows us to simulate and predict its effects on the various components of galaxies, from the diffuse intrahalo light produced by shredded satellites to the perturbative effects of these common accretion events on disk galaxies like the Milky Way. Future observation will confirm the significant role of minor mergers in visible structure on a wide range of scales, from external galaxies and galaxy clusters to the ongoing impact that has driven the formation of spiral structure in our own Galaxy.
