For the Moral and Intellectual Good
註釋The School of Arts movement originated in Britain in the early 1800s with the aim of helping artisans and mechanics to acquire knowledge useful to their trades. In Australia the first Schools of Arts and Mechanics' Institutes were established in the major cities between 1827 and 1840. However, during the second half of the 19th century there was an explosion in their numbers, almost every town of any size having one or more. Their role was much broader than originally conceived, serving both educational and general community needs.Port Macquarie, an early penal settlement, was opened to free settlers in 1830 and formed a short-lived Literary Association in 1840. Its first School of Arts was created in 1856 and although this existed for only a few years it provided impetus for the establishment of a more solidly organised institution. The new School of Arts, established in 1882, served as the hub of community activity for many years and survived until 1951 when its assets were handed over for the establishment of the town's first public library.
