註釋Memoir of acclaimed Alabama historian Leah Rawls Atkins, co-author of Pulitzer Prize-nominated Alabama: The History of a Deep South State and many other books of historical significance. Birmingham native Atkins earned Auburn University's first PhD in history, taught at UAB, Samford, and Auburn and was the founding director of Auburn University's Center for the Arts and Humanities. A World Champion in water skiing, Atkins was the first woman inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Her memoir includes tales of her personal and professional life and the lessons learned along the way. One chapter discusses her summer of visits with author Harper Lee, while others explore family and state history (including race relations) and the bringing of humanities and history programs to Alabama communities. Atkins reminds us how understanding our history helps us know who we are and who we can be.
