Annie Hamilton and Major David Grainger share a conflicted past: as mismatched spouses and now as separated parents. According to David, they broke up because Annie's drive to be a successful inventor did not fit the ideal of an Air Force officer's wife. According to Annie, their break-up was caused by his unfortunate habit of bringing his dictatorial nature into their relationship as if she were in his squadron. Annie is certain that David will never change, so when he announces he's moving in for a month, she knows her life will suffer more turmoil than that caused by the recent explosion of one of her inventions. David, however, is determined to change. They have always agreed that they must do what is best for their son, Maxi, and since David faces a remote tour to Korea soon he's made a final decision -- he wants his family back, and he's going to get them, no matter how long it takes.
