General description of the collection: The Lawrence J. Lincoln papers include correspondence of General Lincoln, 1954 and 1967, tracing the Operations Plans Division (OPD) through the role of its predecessor, the War Plans Division: recounting the OPD's structure and functions during World War II; his own service in the Strategy and Policy Group and later as Chief of the Asiatic Theater Section; and commenting on post-1945 factors working for and against the retention or restoration of OPD. Also included is a transcript of an interview of Lincoln in 1971 concerning his role in OPD; the relationships of Joeseph Stilwell, Albert Wedemeyer, and Alvan C. Gillem to the War Department and to the Chinese during and after World War II; the structure of the General Staff; and the value of attending the Army War College (AWC). Other material includes his commentary (written in 1947 and supplemented in 1949) on a book dealing with China in World War II and with Russo-American occupation of Korea, 1945-1947, and with restoration of home rule there; and his correspondence in 1957 concerning the mythical Colonel Robert T. Lincoln, who was supposedly an American espionage agent in Asia in 1950.
