This study attempts to understand the processes of change within a traditional economic system, relying on historical, economic, and sociological investigation without recoures to psychological determinism. It sets out to demonstrate the specific socio-economic conditions which underlie the differential acceptance or rejection of technological innovation among the raft fishermen of Northeast Brazil.
