註釋
This thesis explores the combined effects of psychological and physical abuse on perceptions about leaving abusive relationships. A series of vignettes describing two levels of physical violence, combined with two forms of psychological abuse, are used as the testing instrument. The gender of the victim and the perpetrator is also varied in the vignettes. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the principles of social cognition and self-enhancement bias apply to perceptions of victims of intimate partner violence. The results of this study indicate that the level of violence in a relationship and the type of threat are significant in altering perceptions of victims' probability of leaving abusive relationships, as are the genders of not only the victim, but the perceiver, as well. These findings provide support for the operation of the principles of social cognition. Additionally, individuals believe they would be more likely to leave a similar situation than the victims described, providing evidence of self-enhancement bias.
