Dreams of Revenge
註釋Dreams of Revenge is a masterpiece in tightly controlled storytelling. It’s written in the first person from the perspective of Michael Waldron, a 20-something Dubliner who goes through a period of personal crisis -- unceremoniously dumping his English girlfriend and then beginning an ill-advised affair with a married woman -- all the while trying to rescue his professional reputation as a fledgling political biographer. Set against the backdrop of political strife and violence during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the novel highlights how these events impact Michael’s decisions and his sense of malaise and ennui. Though the story is primarily set in Dublin, Michael often visits Belfast to research his book about Michael Davitt, a 19th-century Irish Republican activist focused on Home Rule and land reform. But walking the streets unsettles him, unable to "grow accustomed, I thought, to the sight and sound of soldiers on the streets; the nervous foot patrols and the rifles pointing from behind sandbags at the corners".
