Summarizing the literature and gleaning from it a story of industrial eduction presents many problems. In the first place the literature is extensive and difficult decisions must be made about what to include and what to leave out. Sometimes the record is not too clear about significant trends there are many blanks. Statistical data have frequently provided only a few clues to interpretation. Studies and trends can be followed for only a short period of time, and then the story stops there is no more information.
