註釋The purpose of this study was to answer the question asked by many instrumental music teachers, "why aren't my students practicing at home?" This study consisted of two parts. The first part of the study consisted of a survey addressing the amount of time students were involved in extraccurriculur activities. The survey was distributed to 40 middle orchestra students and their parents. Only 10 completed surveys were returned. The second part of the study involved four student participants and explored the strategies implemented by these students during individual practice time. These students were videotaped during an individual practice session and completed an interview discussing the strategies they used during practice. Whether or not students are too busy to practice is still to be determined. However, the results from the second part of the study indicated that students in the study need further instruction regarding effective practice strategies.
