註釋Long before the birth of Christ, astronomers contemplated the sky and began to decipher the mysteries of the universe. Centuries before the birth of Galileo, mathematicians and philosophers measured the radius of the earth and plotted its course around the sun. Even the discontinuous atomic structure of matter was theorized. But the oceans were virtually ignored. The bulk of what we know today about the sea was accumulated in little more than the last 100 years.
