An elevated level of adenosine deaminase in the ascitic fluid and a positive mantoux test lead to a high index of suspicion of abdominal tuberculosis. Laparoscopic examination and subsequent histological examination of biopsy specimens taken during laparoscopy provided definitive evidence of the diagnosis.
