註釋This interdisciplinary study examines a list of 174 sworn men’s names recorded in a legal manuscript from Upper Italy. It situates the list palaeographically, prosopographically, onomastically, and historically in the western Emilia region, showing that it was compiled as troops were being mobilized for a southern Italian campaign led by King Louis II in 847 against the Saracens, who had recently sacked Rome.
