註釋
No original works by Greek philosopher Theophrastus (370-285 BCE) survive, and his ideas are only preserved in the work of later writers quoting or commenting on them. When the two-volume collection of such fragments was published in 1992, eight volumes of commentary on them were said to be following. This volume, numbered eight but only the fourth to appear, focuses on the rhetorical and poetic fragments that are found in the second of the text-translation volumes and numbered there 666 to 713. Fortenbaugh (emeritus classics, Rutgers U.) begins by surveying the types of sources, from the Hellenistic period and republican Rome to the 14th century. His central sections, on the titles of books and texts themselves, follows and references the mother volume. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
