For an entire generation of white South African men, this was code for the undeclared war in Angola and South West Africa (now Namibia) that began with a few skirmishes in the late 1960s and ended, twenty years later, with the most intense and extended conventional battles ever fought in sub-Saharan Africa.

Of the more than 600,000 men called up by the South African Defence Force between 1968 and 1990, over half served in the ‘operational area’.
