This framework outlines the planning direction for water throughout Alberta. The framework supports sustainable resource & environmental management, recognizes both short- and long-term needs & values for water, and considers local & regional perspectives. After an introduction on the intent of the framework and its relationship with provincial policies on sustainability, environmental management, and protection of the aquatic environment, the document sets out concepts to which all future water management planning must adhere. This is followed by a description of the different types of outcomes of the planning process along with guidance for the selection of the most appropriate plan to address the intended purpose. Section 4 describes the development of water management plans & conservation objectives. The final section contains a strategy for the protection of the aquatic environment and directions for its implementation.
