註釋
Pennsylvanian-age Conemaugh Group and Allegheny Formation rocks are exposed in the Clymer 7.5-minute quadrangle in southwestern Pennsylvania. Minable Allegheny Formation coals at or near the surface include primarily the Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning. Shallow portions of these coals have been extensively mined. The Clymer quadrangle is one of six quadrangles being studied in the bituminous coal fields of Pennsylvania to help demonstrate how much coal on average remains available for extraction within a mature mining district. The study in the Clymer quadrangle indicates that of the approximately 498 million short tons of bituminous coal originally present, 90 million short tons have been mined out. An additional 200 million short tons of coal can be excluded due to resource restrictions, such as land-use and technological factors, leaving only about 208 million short tons, or 42 percent, of the original amount of coal available for mining.
