"Former mayor of Peru, Mr. Louis H. Shadensack, took time out in 1935 to pen a record of the street as he knew it in the 1860's, 70's, and 80's. He left the record in our lumber yard office on Water Street. We have printed it in this little booklet as a matter of general interest, adding nothing other than a few punctuation marks for greater clarity and using some old pictures from our own files which also date back to those early days" -- foreword.
